The Notre Dame Cross

The Sisters of Notre Dame are identified by a cross that is worn not as a badge, nor even as a remembrance but as a living sign, a reality that is the very expression of the Congregation's spirit. The cross received by each Sister at her profession marks her resolve to live with her Sisters in firm adherence to the cross of Christ. Sisters wear the cross deliberately as a conscious renewal of their consecration as well as public witness to the spirit of mission of which they strive to be a living expression.

The reverse of the Notre Dame cross carries the words "Ah qu'il est bon le bon Dieu". (Ah, how good is the good God". St. Julie's simple phrase echoed the depth of her appreciation of God's love and generosity. This love rooted in the heart of our foundress and reaching out to all the world gave birth to the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame. ND inscribed in the center at the very heart of the cross reminds each Sister of Mary's place in her heart and in her Congregation.

The cross identifies and unites Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur around the world.
