Sisters of Notre Dame in
The Democratic Republic of Congo
SND foundation established in 1894
The Sisters of Notre Dame presently have 105 Sisters in The Democratic Republic of Congo; many are Congolese women.
Our Congregation has established primary and secondary schools in this country (each with a general and/or maternal health facility) and economic self-development projects for the people. A glimpse into life in this African nation can be found in the fact that our Sisters provide salt, dry fish, and soap as a salary for the teachers in schools. All ministries reach out to children orphaned as a result of AIDS. Many of our missions suffered damage during the Civil War of 1998.
In Congo, we have established seven primary schools, five secondary schools, one women's center, one tailoring school, one hospital and six dispensaries. Our Congregation is currently developing an ambitious project which will establish a network of solar energy stations to bring fresh water and electricity to the people.
