A Boat Named Dorothy

Since her February martyrdom in Brazil, and because of her defense of the poor, Sr. Dorothy Stang’s name, her cause, and her picture have become very familiar among the poor all over Brazil. One of our Sisters related a story following Sr. Dorothy’s death about one of the fishing communities with whom she works, in Ceará, Brazil. The catch of fish and lobsters had been seriously low, mostly due to the pollution of waters near the coastline caused by illegal shrimp farms. Many of the fishing boats were coming back empty after two or three days out on the seas.

Remembering their good friend, a group of six fishermen bought an old boat, fixed it up, baptized it “Dorothy” and put out to sea. The idea worked very well since the boat picked up 80 kilos of lobster on her maiden voyage. “Dorothy” is the talk of the community and the town. A few call it luck; most call it blessing.
