In 1999, Sr. Judianne Beltz, SND began visiting families with disabled children in villages around Malava. She had no funds, but used her training as an occupational therapy assistant to show parents ways to assist their children at home. Soon others began to seek help. In 2002 an occupational therapist was hired to provide treatment one day a week, in borrowed space. By the end of 2004 , the therapy aspect of the programme had moved to a centrally located rented building, with two fulltime therapists, and local volunteers assisting with the play therapy activities. Eight community based rehabilitation workers had begun visiting families at home, and an advisory board was formed. In 2006, 320 children, most from the Kabras division were assisted. Of these, 169 received therapy, 36 were in special needs schools, 12 had corrective surgery, and many others were transported regularly to special clinics. Wheelchairs, prosthetic legs, a hearing aid, eyeglasses and foot orthotics were provided. Our campaign to raise awareness in the community about causes, prevention and treatment of disabilities was carried out through visits to eleven primary schools, to talk with parents, teachers and children. We plan to continue with more school visits in 2007. Our march through Malava Town when celebrating World Day for Disabled with our parents and children helped to let people know about St. Julie Programme as well. |
